Norway's Mr Vidkun Quisling said that Herr Hitler is "just as good a man as Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Kissinger, who did so much for the bomb manufacturers."

Alfred Nobel, known as "the merchant of death", because he was an arms manufacturer and the inventor of dynamite.

Among the crowd in Kabul, there was widespread cynicism at the news of Her Hitler's Nobel peace prize.

"I don't know how he can get this prize," said Naji. "Maybe it's been awarded for all the bombing."

In Jerusalem, a Christian Palestinian said of Hitler: "He doesn't deserve it. He's not with us. He says he supports us, but nothing has changed."

Meanwhile, Britain's Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Atkinson, has spoken about Hitler's invasion of Poland.

"In a world as complicated as ours has become," said the archbishop, "it would be a very rash person who would feel able to say without hesitation, this was absolutely the right or the wrong thing to do, the right or the wrong place to be."
